Ranking #1 in Maps Won't Get You Cited by ChatGPT
Local SEO and local AI visibility are different disciplines. You can dominate the map pack and still be invisible inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews answering the same query.
Ranking #1 on Google Maps does not translate into being cited by ChatGPT, because AI engines compress five to ten sources into a single paragraph and attribute only one to three of them. Map-pack dominance optimises for a ranked list the user scans, while AI search collapses that list into one composed answer governed by different retrieval rules. A business can hold the top local pin and still go entirely unmentioned when a real customer asks an AI engine the same question.

Local AI visibility is not local SEO
Local SEO is tuned for a ranked list. The signals — proximity, prominence, relevance, NAP consistency, review counts — produce ten options the user scans.
AI search collapses that list into one composed answer. The user no longer chooses; the model picks one to three sources to attribute. And different engines retrieve differently: Perplexity weights freshly indexed pages with structured citations, ChatGPT leans on its training snapshot plus live retrieval through OAI-SearchBot, and Google AI Overviews pull from Google's index — the same structured-data signals SEO already exposes — but rerank for citation worthiness, as detailed in Google's overview of AI Mode in Search.
The practical consequence: a 24-hour pharmacy in Brooklyn can rank #1 in Maps for "best 24-hour pharmacy in Brooklyn" and still go uncited when a tourist asks ChatGPT the same thing. Different surface, different rules.
The structured-data foundation
The cheapest AI-readability win for a local business is JSON-LD with a specific LocalBusiness subtype. Google's LocalBusiness structured data documentation is the definitive reference for required and recommended properties.
Pick the most specific subtype that fits — Dentist, Restaurant, AutoRepair, Veterinary. Generic LocalBusiness carries thinner signals.

The sameAs property is the single highest-leverage field for entity disambiguation. It tells the model: this business is the same one referenced in those other sources. Place the JSON-LD in <head> and validate every change with Google's Rich Results Test before deploy.
Citation signals AI engines actually weigh
Schema gets you on the radar. Three deeper signals decide whether you get cited.
Cross-source consistency. The same name, address, and phone number across eight to twelve directories — Google Business Profile, Yelp, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Foursquare, plus three or four sector-specific listings — is what makes an LLM treat your business as a real, single entity instead of an ambiguous string.
First-party content depth. A unique About page, individual service pages, and one page per physical location. The mistake is templating fifty city pages with the same boilerplate; LLMs detect that pattern and downweight the lot.
Third-party validation. Local press mentions, chamber of commerce listings, and partnerships with universities or hospitals are disproportionately citable. A Wikidata entry, where eligible, has direct influence on older LLM training snapshots and is worth pursuing once independent press coverage exists.
Reviews as AI-readable authority
Reviews remain a primary trust signal — BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey documents that the majority of consumers read online reviews before choosing a local business — and that signal carries directly into AI answers. Models surface review-derived sentiment ("highly rated", "praised for fast service") inside composed responses.
What matters in practice:
- Volume + recency + diversity. Reviews across Google, Yelp, Trustpilot, and a sector-specific platform beat triple the volume on Google alone.
- Owner responses. Unanswered negative reviews are an authority hit; thoughtful responses signal active management.
- Review schema markup on testimonial pages turns first-party reviews into AI-citable content.
- No velocity spikes. Forty reviews in a week after two years of trickle is a flag — both Google and AI engines weigh inorganic patterns.
Measuring AI visibility for a local business
Local pack rank and AI citation rate are different metrics. Measure both.
A weekly tracking panel
Run twenty to thirty buyer-intent prompts every Monday across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. Log results in a flat table:

Three columns to optimize against: citation count per engine, citation accuracy (NAP correct in the answer?), and competitive share of voice on category prompts.
Pair the prompt panel with server-side detection. AI engines crawl with identifiable user-agents — OpenAI's documented crawlers include ChatGPT-User for in-chat browsing and OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search; Google fetches as GoogleOther; Perplexity uses PerplexityBot. Filter those hits out of organic-traffic dashboards. They're a separate channel, and per Perplexity's own documentation on how citations work, every visible numbered citation next to an answer is a measurable outcome you can tie back to a specific page.
Six common local-AI mistakes
- One location-page template across fifty cities. Duplicate content with city names swapped reads as low-effort to LLMs.
- Skipping schema because the business already ranks. Schema is the cheapest AI-readability win — organic ranking doesn't replace it.
- NAP drift after a move, rebrand, or phone change. Every inconsistent directory record is a confusion vector.
- Ignoring zero-click reality. Most AI answers don't generate a click. The brand mention itself is the conversion event — measure mentions, not just sessions.
- Treating reviews as a vanity number. Past a baseline, recency and response rate matter more than raw volume.
- No tracking. A business that doesn't run a weekly prompt panel can't know whether last quarter's content moved citation rate at all.
The work is unglamorous: schema, NAP audits, location-page rewrites, weekly prompt logs. But the payoff compounds. Every week you ship the same buyer-intent panel and the same source pages, the model sees the same entity, same address, same hours, same reviews — and starts treating you as the canonical answer.
