The moat works because generative models prefer one canonical answer over five thin ones, and it compounds when every refreshed claim preserves its anchor and citation surface. Engineer it wrong, and erosion sets in within a year.

The classic SEO pillar is a topic hub: a long page that ranks for a head term and routes link equity to clusters below it. The AI citation pillar is something different. Its job is not to rank — it is to be the source LLMs quote when they answer adjacent questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude.

The moat has three dimensions:
