How Gemini Decomposes a Query: The Fan-Out Model
When a user types a complex question into Google, the AIO doesn't render from the top-10 SERP. Google describes AI Overviews as running on a customized Gemini model that performs multi-step reasoning and breaks complex questions into parts (Generative AI in Search). That breakdown — the query fan-out — is the part most SEO playbooks skip.
Take a query like "best payment processor for a US Shopify store doing $50k/month." Gemini doesn't search that string verbatim. It fans out into something like:
- "payment processors compatible with Shopify"
- "Stripe vs Adyen vs Square fees comparison"
- "payment processor pricing at $50k monthly volume"
- "chargeback handling for ecommerce processors"
Each sub-query runs its own retrieval. The visible AIO is a stitched answer drawn from passages that match those sub-queries — not from one canonical "winner." The implication is uncomfortable for SEO teams: organic rank is a weak proxy for AIO presence. What matters is whether your page contains a passage that cleanly answers any of the sub-queries Gemini fanned out into.
What Triggers an AI Overview — and What Suppresses One
Not every query gets an AIO, and the trigger pattern is more predictable than the day-to-day volatility suggests.
More likely to trigger:
- Informational queries with multiple parts ("how do I migrate from Shopify to Webflow without losing SEO")
- Comparison queries ("Stripe vs Adyen for SaaS billing")
- Multi-step instructional queries ("how to set up Stripe Connect for a marketplace")
Less likely or actively suppressed:
- Transactional and navigational queries ("Stripe login," "buy Notion subscription")
- Single-entity lookups (a specific product SKU, a specific person)
- YMYL queries — your money, your life — covering health, finance, and safety
After the May 2024 launch, Google publicly cut back AIO appearance on certain query types in response to viral failure cases like the "glue on pizza" and rock-eating answers (AI Overviews: About last week). Health queries in particular saw heavy suppression. If you operate in fintech, healthtech, or legal, expect AIO presence to be sparse and unstable.
There's also day-to-day volatility on the same query. A query that fires an AIO on Monday may not on Wednesday. Measurement has to be longitudinal — single snapshots lie. Track AIO presence per query weekly, not as a one-time audit.
Page Structure Patterns That Win Citation Slots
Google states plainly that pages eligible to appear in Search are eligible to appear in AI features like AI Overviews — there's no separate opt-in beyond standard indexing controls (AI features and your website). What gets you cited is structure, not metadata gymnastics.
Five patterns consistently show up in cited passages:
- Self-contained answer paragraphs of 40–80 words placed directly under a question-form H2 or H3. The extractor needs a complete proposition it can lift without stitching context from elsewhere on the page.
- Comparison tables where each row is a complete proposition. "Stripe charges 2.9% + 30¢ for online card payments" beats "Stripe is competitive on pricing."
- Definition + example + caveat triplets. This is the shape Gemini's extractor consistently prefers — a noun defined, an instance shown, a limit named.
- Inline schema markup (FAQPage, HowTo, Product) that disambiguates the entity for retrieval. Schema doesn't guarantee citation, but it reduces ambiguity in passage selection.
- Stable URLs with on-page anchor IDs so the AIO can deep-link to the exact passage. Slug churn kills citation continuity.
Academic work on Generative Engine Optimization from Princeton found that source-level features like citations, quotations, and statistics measurably increase the chance a passage is selected by a generative answer engine, independent of organic rank (GEO: Generative Engine Optimization). Embedding a primary source link inside an answer paragraph isn't decoration — it's a retrieval signal.
Reading a Public AIO: Before/After Diagnosis
The fastest way to learn what Gemini wants is to reverse-engineer a live AIO.
The method is mechanical:
- Run a query that triggers an AIO. Capture the panel.
- List every cited source.
- Open each. Find the exact passage Gemini lifted.
- Reverse-engineer the sub-query that passage answered.
Run this on five queries in your space and the pattern jumps out fast: the cited sites are often not the #1–#3 organic results. They're the ones with a passage that maps cleanly to one of Gemini's sub-queries.
Common "before" failure: the cited site has the answer buried in paragraph nine of a 3,000-word post. The page ranks because it's authoritative on the broad topic, but the specific passage lift is incidental — and therefore unstable.
Common "after" fix: extract that passage into a question-led section near the top of the page with a stable anchor (e.g., #stripe-vs-adyen-saas-fees). Same content, restructured. We've watched a single restructure shift citation share for a query from a competitor to the publisher with no change to backlinks or rank — the only delta was passage placement and an anchor ID.
Suppressed queries teach the inverse lesson. If a query that looks AIO-eligible doesn't fire one, check the SERP for YMYL signals or strong commercial intent — those explain most absences.
A Practitioner Playbook for Q2 2026
Here's the workflow we recommend for any team treating AIO citations as a real channel:
- Bucket your top 50 ranking queries by AIO presence. Run each through a tracker — or manually — over two weeks. Split into "AIO-active" and "AIO-skip."
- For AIO-active queries, audit pages for sub-question coverage, not keyword coverage. Take the visible AIO, list its cited passages, and check whether your page contains equivalent passages — discoverable, anchored, and self-contained.
- Restructure for extraction. Add question-led H2s. Move buried answers up. Wrap comparisons in tables. Add anchor IDs. Verify section by section: does each one answer one specific sub-query?

- Don't chase YMYL AIOs. If your queries are health, finance, or legal, expect AIO suppression and weight your strategy toward direct traffic and traditional SERP plays.
